Surveys and Research on Logistics Systems
JILS takes advantage of its nonprofit status to more accurately assess domestic and foreign economic conditions and trends in logistics; to carry out surveys and analyses of logistics measures taken by central and municipal governments; to make forecasts, and to propose policies. Other activities cover a wide range of areas, such as assessing trends, drafting strategies, and carrying out research and development to meet industry needs. Concrete results are achieved by utilizing the membership's extensive network, our organization's greatest asset. We also form partnerships with private-sector think tanks and integrate the wisdom of specialists from all fields related to logistics.
A. Conducting Surveys
We conduct a broad range of surveys to gather information for review and further research. Following is a list of our surveys to date.
- Building logistics systems that is in harmony with the environment
- Creating a system to spread the use of methanol as vehicle fuel
- Assessing the status of third-party logistics
- Assessing the status of import logistics in Asian countries
- Reviewing high-tech logistics information system development in business
- Revising JILS logistics terminology
- Popularizing uniform palletization
- Assessing the status of logistics costs by industry, including international comparison of logistics costs

B. Building a Logistics Database
We collect, organize, and process the latest data, and then distribute it, thus fulfilling a vital role as a comprehensive logistics information center. Our activities in this area are multifaceted.

II. Policy Proposals for Logistics Systems
JILS makes suggestions to governmental and industrial organizations about updating Japan's logistics systems. We promote policies to ensure that logistics meet contemporary needs. To this end, we have created innovative incentive systems and educational plans to promote logistics.
III. Awards System
We have designed an awards system to promote awareness and education within the field, as well as to encourage the advancement of logistics.
(1) Logistics Grand Prize
This prize is given for outstanding achievements in the area of logistics promotion by supporting the development of logistics in society and raising the consciousness of those involved in the field of logistics.
(2) Logistics Rationalization Award
(3) Logistics Rationalization Award
This award is presented for outstanding improvement in the practical aspects of logistics.
The recipient is selected annually from the presentations made at the All-Japan Convention for Logistics Improvement Case Studies.
IV. Development and Training of Human Resources for Logistics
We have developed a broad range of training courses, designed to meet all the various needs of companies and organizations.
(1) Basic logistics management
Basic course for those who are just entering the field of logistics
(2) Training via classroom and correspondence study
Classroom training coupled with correspondence classes on logistics management
(3) Logistics qualifications
Long-term training to develop logistics specialists. Qualifications include Certified Logistics Senior Master (CLSM), Certified Logistics Kaizen Master (CLKM), Certified Logistics Master (CLM), International Logistics Master (ILM), and Green Logistics Master (GLM).

A key topic in logistics is selected for active exchange among registered participants

V. Promotion of Logistics Systems through Study Groups, Lectures, and Conferences
We offer many forums for educating professionals and the public alike. Structured courses are only one of the tools we use. We have also designed many contemporary forums for encouraging discussion and disseminating information. Although at times these events are less structured than formal courses, they are no less stimulating.

VI. Publications
JILS publishes pamphlets and other materials on logistics management and technology, including Logistics Systems , a Japanese language journal for JILS members that is published six times a year.
(1) Logistics Solution Fair
The purpose of this fair is to propose logistics solutions based on management strategy, provide support for the realization of enhanced efficiency and overall optimization of corporate management, and contribute to the strengthening of Japan’s international competitiveness.

Every two years, JILS sponsors the International Material Handling, Storage, and Distribution Exhibition: LOGIS-TECH TOKYO. This exhibition, the largest of its kind in Asia, features displays and demonstrations of industrial vehicles, transport and handling equipment, storage and packing devices, pallets, containers, software, and related equipment to automate, systematize, and conserve labor in every area of physical distribution. More than 150,000 people attend LTT where some 300 companies from Japan and overseas exhibit their products in 1,700 booths.
(3) Asia-Pacific Logistics Federation (APLF)

The APLF was established in November 1995 by logistics organizations in countries in the Asia-Pacific region. It was designed to promote the efficient functioning of logistics in the region through exchange and studies by APLF group members.
(4) Conference on Green Logistics in Japan(CGL)
Since 1997 JILS has conducted numerous studies and surveys on logistics and the environment. The Conference on Green Logistics in Japan was established in November 2003, with the aim of using the knowledge thus accumulated as a basis for development of environment-friendly logistics systems that can be recognized worldwide. The goals of JILS are to build such systems through the combined efforts of various companies and industries in cooperation with the government and academic sectors, and subsequently to promote widespread knowledge and use of these systems domestically and around the world.
